From pristine beaches fringed with swaying palm trees to mist-shrouded mountains adorned with tea plantations, Sri Lanka offers a kaleidoscope of natural wonders. This 5-day itinerary covers some popular as well as offbeat locations along Lanka’s southwest coastline. It is a perfect blend of architecture, beach relaxation and adventure

Day 1: Land at Colombo airport and drive to Dickwella.

Start your Sri Lanka adventure by landing in the vibrant capital city of Colombo. Depending on your flight time, you can choose to spend the night in Colombo or take a scenic drive to Hirketiya – Dickwella beach. The drive to your coastal paradise will take approximately 2.5 hours. Dickwella beach features soft sands that are perfect for leisurely walks and sunbathing. Moreover, is also known for its calm waves making it an ideal spot for a refreshing swim

Day 2: Polhena Beach & Mirissa

On the second day, start by renting a scooter and making your way to Polhena Beach, also known as Turtle Beach. This beautiful white sand beach, located near Matara town, is a great spot for snorkeling. The beach’s shallow waters create a natural reef, providing a safe habitat for turtles. During our visit, we had the amazing opportunity to witness 3-4 turtles up close, which was a truly wonderful experience. After spending 2-3 hours exploring Polhena Beach, head towards the popular Mirissa Beach, just a 20-minute drive away. For a delicious lunch, visit Ceylon Curry House and indulge in Sri Lankan cuisine. Don’t miss the chance to visit Coconut Hill, just a 5-minute uphill walk. However, be prepared for crowds as it is a popular spot. Take a leisurely walk along Mirissa Beach or explore one of the many vibrant cafes in this lively beach town before making your way back to Dickwella.

Day 3 : Explore the nearby Hirketiya beach, Yala National Park

Spend half a day at the neighboring Hiriketiya Beach, known for its crescent-shaped bay and golden sands. The calm waters are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and learning to surf. Check out at 12 noon and head to Yala National Park, which is a 2-hour drive away. I recommend staying at one of the eco-lodges or safari camps near the park . In my opinion Cinnamon Wild is a great choice as the resort offers a unique and immersive experience, with wildlife frequently visiting the nearby backwaters. Yala National Park offers a vast expanse of untamed wilderness, with the majestic ocean on one side. Take an afternoon/evening safari or relax and enjoy the property.

Day 4: Yala National Park Morning Safari

The jeep will pick you up from the hotel at 4:30-5 am depending on how far you are staying from the main entrance gate of Yala. The opening timing are 6 am and you enter just at the break of the dawn to maximize maximize wildlife sightings. The park’s natural beauty, including dense forests, open grasslands, and scenic lakes, provides a captivating and an eerie backdrop. We witnessed a cute family of elephants for a good 15-20 mins before rest of the safari jeeps also started to come and scared the elephants into the jungle. Unfortunately, we couldn’t spot the elusive leopard or the black bear but that’s our luck.
Check out at 12 noon and head towards Galle, a 3-hour drive away. You will have the evening to stroll around the fort area of Galle and spend the evening witnessing the sunset from atop the high walls of the Fort

Day 4 & 5 : Galle

Galle is a fortified city with a rich history. Explore the well-preserved Galle Fort, known for its colonial-era buildings, cobblestone streets, and picturesque vibe. Discover boutiques, art galleries, and cafes within the fort walls. I highly recommend staying at one of the restored heritage hotels in Galle Fort. In the evening, take a short tuk-tuk ride to Unawatuna for a sunset. Keep in mind that Unawatuna can be crowded with tourists, shops, and hawkers, therefore, finding a quiet spot may be challenging.

Where to Stay

Dickwella/ Hirketiya : We recommend Voulez-vous , which offers simple yet neat rooms and is conveniently located right on the beach. They serve amazing breakfast and the hosts are very friendly. In Hirketiya you will find plenty of upscale boutique hotels and airbnbs suitable for bigger groups. We really liked this property link

Yala National Park : Cinnamon Wild Yala

Galle : The Bartizan Galle Fort is a beautifully restored property which dates back to 17th century. It is pricey, although you cannot ask for a more convenient location.

In conclusion this 5-day itinerary combines the highlights as well as some less popular yet equally charming places in Sri Lanka. However, it is just a fraction of what this remarkable island nation has to offer. I cannot wait to visit again and explore the iconic Sigiriya Rock or the tea plantations and many waterfalls of Nuwara Eliya.
